Art

From elementary school to university, art can be a form of education that engages students in a way that is impactful and memorable. Indigenous art is a fantastic way to open the topic up to begin discussing various stories, beliefs, and values of Indigenous peoples. Nadia Myre, for example, is a contemporary artist who created the “Scar Project” where she invited the public to come and sew their “scars” into a square canvas. The collective piece is a beautiful way to share and express some of the deep hurts within Indigenous peoples. Having activities such as this run by an Indigenous artist such as Myre, students will be able to have an impactful experience by hearing some of the hurts, as well as being able to express themselves as they learn about Indigenous peoples. This can also contribute to the truth and reconciliation process in Saskatchewan as students begin to understand Indigenous culture and the deep hurts that many of them have, and still struggle with today.
